Modesty Versus Humidity and Heat

As you may have notice, we’ve been having an extreme heat wave–and it’s only June! I don’t know how I’m going to deal with the humidity and heat come August. I can’t deal with the heat very well, so we’ve been staying indoors a lot, seeking comfort in the air conditioner. Now we are being forced to leave–our air conditioner broke!

Not only does a broken air conditioner make you think of new ways to keep cool, it also makes you think of creative ways to stay modest. I have to admit, I quickly tired of my favorite long jersey skirt. I found a pair of shorts hidden in my closet and wore those with tanks that I usually layered under my shirts. Yes, I both looked and felt cool. But something just didn’t settle right with me in those clothes. As tempted as I was to wear a dress like the one below, I just felt like I wanted to be more covered up.

Now there are modest ways you can deal with humidity and heat. My long skirts really aren’t a good option for me, at least until we get the air conditioner fixed. However, a mid-length would be appropriate when made with a flattering pattern; modest skirts don’t always have to be ankle lengths. There are also modest tanks–in the style of a sleeveless shirt–like the woman in the picture is wearing. I feel much cooler without something on my arms.

Modesty doesn’t have to be pushed aside when summer weather gets brutal. I feel confident that I can face the humidity and heat of New Orleans without feeling uncomfortable about my appearance.

  1. I agree so much! I’m always amazed when other modest ladies don’t feel sleeveless is an option. I know some women only wear long sleeves, but they must not live in the South! It is already 100 degrees here, and the humidity is awful. I feel that we all have arms, so as long as my underwear is covered, I’m good!
