Growing up, I guess you could have called me a tomboy. It was no surprise; I had boys my ages in the houses on both sides of me. I could often be found climbing trees, catching lizards, and playing in the dirt. I even asked Santa for a trucking set one year. However, I still loved to wear dresses, put makeup on my dolls, and play house. I was a tomboy, but I also liked to do girly things at the same time.
My daughter is the same way. She will dress Heart up and put her to bed, and in the next breath play with a stuffed snake. This is a girl who loves soccer and kicking balls at every chance. We tried putting her in dance, but soccer and similar activities are one area where she really shines. But how does a little girl stay modest while keeping active or when getting dirty? Can there be such a thing as a modest tomboy? There are several options to look at when considering this:
- Regular skirt We’ve taken W to the park when she was wearing a longer skirt. They aren’t really made for climbing on playground equipment. There is always the danger of the skirt getting caught on something. Also, if she starts running, she can trip over it. Because, let’s face it, she has her momma’s graceful moves.
- Skorts Since skorts have built-in shorts, they seem to be made for active play. However, I find that the legs of many skorts seem to gape some and may not have adequate coverage when climbing or tumbling around.
- Shorter skirts and bike shorts These are similar to the concept of the skorts, but in two separate pieces. The legs of bike shorts tend to be tighter, so they don’t really gape open.
- Modest shorts We actually wound up doing this for W’s soccer class. She wore either cuffed shorts or longer ones at about the knees. It’s really hard to find modest shorts for girls, so this may be a difficult outfit to put together.
If you prefer to put your daughter in a dress or a skirt for activities but are worried her getting them dirty, make sure that the clothing you buy something easy to move in (such as 100% cotton) and that has easy washing instructions. I know that not everyone has tomboy like I do, but it is important for children to stay active. Knowing what clothing works best for your family and your child’s situation will help her do so in style.
