A few weeks back, our air conditioner got sick. In fact, the repairman said it didn’t have much time left. We said our goodbyes and waited for a new unit to be installed. Which meant we went about a week without air conditioner. I learned some good ways to survive in rising temperatures. Here are my suggestions on how to beat the summer heat when the a/c goes out.
How to Beat the Summer Heat with No Air Conditioner
Rig something.
I’m serious. Don’t laugh at what I’m about to tell you. I took a small tabletop fan and hung it on the legs of a chair. I went a towel and laid it over a step stool and set it in front of the fan. My daughter spent a lot of time in front of my invention, and so did one of the cats!
Cold compresses
Soak hand towels in ice cold water and drape them around your neck. They really help cool you down, especially if you add a few drops of Florida Water. I did this all day long. I tried to get the kids to try it, but they wanted no part of it.
Oscillating fans
We bought a couple of tower fans to help us out while waiting for the air conditioner, one for each floor. They didn’t blow cool air, but they helped move air around so we got a bit of a breeze. It especially helped upstairs where the air was warmer. After the air conditioner came, I moved one up into the attic so I could stay cool while working in there.
But we don’t like running the air conditioner all day, so we added a third oscillating tower fan. I only wish we had discovered it earlier. It is called the Honeywell QuietSet Whole Room Tower and it is awesome!
Not only is the Whole Room Tower quiet like its name implies, it also has a lot of options to keep cool:
- adjustable thermostat
- digital temperature display
- eight levels
- remote control
First I must say that this fan actually makes it cooler in the room. Because it has so many levels, I can actually find a temperature that is comfortable. If I don’t want the fan to oscillate, I can also choose to let the air blow in one direction. I like even at the highest setting, with the oscillator on, the fan still does not make a huge amount of noise. And you know I need my home as noise free as possible!
The remote that comes with the fan is an added bonus–W hasn’t put it down! I like the convenience of not having to get up to change settings if I have a child in my lap. The QuietSet Whole Room Tower from Honeywell is an excellent choice for our family. If you have a difficult to cool room, I would highly recommend it.
