It is something you have dreaded all week. So you put it off until the weekend. Then your husband is called into work. Now there is no escape. Be very afraid… You have to take your children with you to the store!
I really dislike grocery shopping with my children. One of them always starts complaining about something about five minutes into the first store. I always wind up buying some piece of junk to placate them so I can concentrate on shopping. It shouldn’t be like that for any of us. In this post, I will be giving advice on how to painlessly conquer grocery shopping with children.
Feed your everyone before you leave home.
Hungry children equal cranky children. There is nothing like disrupting a shopping trip to mix formula for a fussy baby or having to stand in line to buy your toddler a box of animal crackers. While you are at it, feed yourself. Ever wonder how that junk food got in your cart? Hungry Mama put it there!
Pack a snack for yourself and your kids.
Number one isn’t going to last forever. Kids will get hungry again fast. Instead of giving into petitions for candy that will only lead to a sugar crash, carry a healthy alternative with you. Suggestions are: unsweetened cereal, dried fruit (homemade won’t have extra sugar), or whole grain crackers. Also keep in mind that sugary sodas and juices may lead to dehydration in the summer heat. Bring bottle water along as well; stainless steel bottles will keep it colder longer.
Keep your children entertained.
If you have little ones that are content to stay in the cart, you can keep them busy with a toy from home, a board book, or crayons. Older children can be given a short list of products to search for. Since my children are learning to read, they enjoy searching for items to put in their own shopping carts.
You no longer have to be afraid to leave home! Taking your kids to the store can be painless, as long as you skip the toy aisle!
