The Thrill of the Hunt: Building Your Child’s Wardrobe

I used to love scavenger hunts as a kid. I remember winning one with a live catfish one year. Getting the best item is always so exciting! Did you know that buying children’s clothing can be like a scavenger hunt as well?

About a month ago, I went to a bag sale at a children’s clothing store. You could stuff a bag with clothing and get a percentage off the entire sale, even clearance item. Guess who rushed over to the clearance rack? I packed that bag full; I believe I got about $80 taken off my total. If you look hard, you can find bargains like that too!

I also enjoy hunting for bargains on sites such as Zulily. They feature daily deals on items for women and children. You can find clothing and shoes for a fraction of the cost!

But one of the most exciting things I’ve done lately is shop at a consignment sale. The one I found was the Rhea Lana sale, which has biannual events throughout the country. If you haven’t been to a consignment sale, go! Mothers take the best of their children’s old clothing and sell it on commission. I found several shirts, pairs of shorts, dresses, and books for under $50 total. I got this dress for $3:

If you feel the need to hunt down a bargain next time your children need new clothes, be sure to try one of these methods. Never has shopping been so fun!

  1. We were VERY fortunate during the first 2.5 years…hand-me-down’s were coming in faster than you could imagine! That all changed in the past 6-8 months and therefore we really have a brand new expense in our budget. Purchasing clothing for our son used to be a leisurely fun shopping experience. I would see something I liked and buy it. The hand-me-downs were all MINT (seriously! 2 of my girlfriends had boys and said they barely wore each thing 1-2x a piece!). I am always looking for new ways to save on my sons wardrobe.

.. doesn’t it seem like by the time their wardrobe is complete – it’s time to start a NEW one in a different size?!? :)

    Thanks for the ideas!

  2. I’ve never actually been to a consignment shop, maybe I should go check one out! I love shopping at thrift stores though. For the amount of time a child wears an outfit, I don’t want to pay $20 for it.

  3. I love Zulily! Definitely a good site to be on for good deals and mommies who are on a budget (which with this economy is almost everyone…) should be using Zulily.
