All she wanted was a simple Amish life . . . But now Marianna Sommer finds herself depending on Englisch neighbors. Although proud of living apart from the world, she and her newly relocated Amish family have discovered that life in the remote mountains of Montana requires working together.
As Marianna begins helping those different from herself—and receiving their help—her heart contemplates two directions. She’s torn between the Amish man from Indiana whom she has long planned on marrying and the friendly Englischer who models a closer walk with God than she’s ever seen before.
Who should have young Marianna’s heart? What is God asking her to sacrifice? Her traditions? Her community? The answer is found along the wooded paths.
Tricia has a way of writing that makes me feel at home amid the Amish. Even though I had not yet read the first book of the “Big Sky” series, I felt as though I knew Marianna. The little details about farming, speech, and even quilt designs drew me deeper into the Plain life. I talked to Tricia about her research; she lived close to West Kootenai, Montana where she was introduced to Amish residents by a friend from the area. She was also able to ask many questions of friends who were former Amish.
The plot of the book kept me in constant suspense. At times, I was undecided which man I wanted Marianna to pick. They both had great qualities. Even though she knew which man Marianna would end up with from the start, Tricia says she would occasionally feel the same pull. Letters that Marianna writes throughout the book help the reader become invested in her relationship with both of the men right to the end of the book. Not to disappoint an eager audience, Tricia includes a chapter of book three in the series, as well as several Amish recipes. I highly recommend the book if you enjoy beautiful scenery and quiet moments among friends.
